The west mesa
Rio Grande Estates spreads across the mesa west of Los Lunas off NM-6. It's open, sandy country with large lots and many unpaved roads, where homes are built one at a time with plenty of space around them.
What works here
- Asphalt near the house — parking, turnaround, garage approach.
- Millings or chip seal toward the road. See mesa-lot driveways.
- Compacted, crowned base under everything.
- Edges supported so sand doesn't wash out from beneath.
- Storm water planned so it crosses the lot, not the drive.
New construction
If you're building, rough-grade the drive during construction and pave once the heavy trucks are done.

Common questions
Is it worth paving on a dirt road?
Near the house, usually yes.
Will sand blow onto my new driveway?
Some will. A paved surface sweeps clean easily.
Do you work all over Rio Grande Estates?
Yes.
